As a sponsor, you will contact the new family (via phone or e-mail) and answer any questions they might have. You might direct them to the appropriate sources for further information and tell them about school events or activities that may be of interest. MOCK ACT/SAT Exams - College Entrance Exam Prep

Fall Mock Exam Test Details:

  • Mock tests will be authentic practice tests published by the College Board (SAT) and ACT, Inc. (ACT)

  • Students choose which one of the two tests they would like to complete.

  • Saturday, October 28, students should arrive at 8 AM to check in and should bring #2 pencils, a calculator and a snack.

  • Remember, Mindworks accepts NO compensation for the 50+ hours they spend analyzing our students' scores and writing our students' reports. This means the Woodson PTSO receives 100% of the proceeds!

  • In return, parents and students agree to attend the Score Report Session for a brief presentation before receiving the score analysis and packet.

The PTSO “mock” exam program offers full-length ACT and SAT exams to help prepare Woodson students take these college entrance exams. Although the mock exams are full-length “real” tests, the scores are not official, not reported to The College Board/ACT or any college, and should not be confused with the official PSAT, ACT, and SAT exams offered throughout the school year. 100% of the test fee benefits Woodson PTSO Parent-Teacher-Student Programs. MINDWORKS accepts NO compensation for the 50+ hours they spend analyzing our students' scores and writing our students' reports. In exchange for Woodson PTSO receiving 100% of the proceeds, parents and students agree to attend the Score Report Session for a brief presentation before receiving the score analysis and packet.

Please note that the mock ACT and SAT exam program is geared primarily to sophomores and juniors, although Freshmen are welcome to register. Current Juniors should not miss this great event, as you will begin testing in the spring!

2017-2018 WTW PTSO Grant Requests

2017 Fall WTW PTSO Grant Proposal Package

PTSO GRANTS that support projects, activities, and programs for students and teachers. Last year, the dues paid by PTSO members and parent donations helped us award $10,000+ to support the Arts, Music, Athletics, Library and Academic programs at Woodson including guest speakers, the Stress-Less-Laugh-More Program, Teacher/Staff Hospitality events and much more.

With the generous support of Woodson families and the Administration, the W.T. Woodson PTSO is able to open our Fall 2017 Grant Program and begin accepting applications at that time.

PTSO Memberships are available using the link http://www.woodsonptso.org/join-ptso.html for $5 per staff member, $5 per student or $15 per parent.

Please note that all grants allocations should be spent in this 2017-18 school year.

PTSO Considerations for Review of Grant Proposal

The Grant Committee will review applications and present recommendations (proposals and funding amounts) to the PTSO general membership for voting. In its review, the Committee considers the following factors including but not limited to:

  • The degree of direct relationship to the students program of study.
  • The number of students (of the general student body or of a sub-set) that the proposal benefits.
  • The extent of impact on the total school community.
  • The sustainability of the project (single use or multi-year multi-purpose).
In compliance with PTSO guidelines and IRS regulations for non-profit organizations, the W.T. Woodson PTSO grants may not be used for association memberships or activities that result in primarily personal gains (by students, parents or teachers/staff).

Helpful Notes for Grant Recipients

To pay for projects funded by the PTSO: Grant recipients may request the PTSO to write checks directly to vendors upon receipt of an invoice/proof of purchase, or receive reimbursement by providing a receipt for payment. Either way, please use the reimbursement request form - CLICK HERE

To pay for projects funded by WTW: Please contact Ms. Cindi Navarrete in the finance office at cmnavarrete@fcps.edu for guidance on making your purchases.

To avoid being charged taxes: the PTSO is a tax-exempt organization, and therefore we prefer not to reimburse for taxes. To avoid being charged tax, please submit a request for a check or use of the PTSO debit card to Kristin Driscoll at treasurer@woodsonptso.org PRIOR TO YOUR PURCHASE. Then you will have the ability to purchase tax free.

To tag PTSO funded material: items purchased with PTSO grant funds become the property of W.T. Woodson High School, and should be tagged as such. Therefore, for any books, software, or other permanent instructional materials or equipment, please contact the W.T. Woodson front office for tags.

To close the project: PTSO membership is interested in learning about the outcome of the funded projects. Please summarize the outcome by emailing a brief paragraph to the Chair, Shawn Guth at Grants@woodsonptso.org by Friday, January 26, 2018.

 

Student Driver Car Magnets

Did you know? Virginia requires students to complete 45 hours of behind-the-wheel driving with a “qualified” driver before they can obtain a license. For your peace of mind and for those around you: Woodson’s PTSO offers highly visible yellow & black “STUDENT DRIVER” car magnets to post on all sides (driver’s door, passenger door, front & rear) of the vehicle your student drives. You’ll appreciate the added awareness of other drivers to your student’s driving trials and tribulations. You can find these popular car magnets to purchase at major school events or in the Woodson front office.

The Woodson PTSO sells engraved bricks to raise money to help fund various beautification projects at the school. The brick courtyard in front of the School, between the main entrance and the auditorium, still has plenty of room for bricks for you to remember your special student.

Individual brick cost: $100

Engraved bricks will be intermixed with regular paver bricks. And, they make great graduation presents for your Seniors!

 

 

WeMail Submission Guidelines

WeMail for the 2018-2018 year will resume on the first day of school, Monday, August 28.

The WeMail is the PTSO’s weekly email sent to the Woodson community. It includes topics of timely interest to Woodson students, parents, and staff, such as Booster/Club information, student activities, PTSO program information, and sports highlights. Our goal is to distribute the WeMail every Monday afternoon; if Monday is a holiday, expect to see the WeMail the following Tuesday afternoon.

To achieve this goal and make the weekly task of putting together the WeMail manageable for our volunteer editor, we ask everyone who submits something for the WeMail to follow these basic guidelines:

  1. The goal is to provide a submission that the editor can copy and paste into the body of the WeMail. Use Arial 12-point font whenever possible
  2. Try to keep submissions to no more than 150 words. Tip: Include the basics and link to more information if it exists elsewhere on the Internet.
  3. Include the exact date(s) you want the item to appear in the WeMail. (All dates should fall on a Monday!) When no date is provided, the submission will run the Monday after it is received. If Monday is a school holiday, it will run on a Tuesday.
  4. Do not submit too far in advance. Aim for one or two weeks prior to an event (or the date an action is due). If there is no end date to a submission, the typical length of time allowed is 3 weeks.
  5. Consider that the FCPS News You Choose delivery system does not allow attachments such as flyers often required for restaurant fundraisers. However, we can create hyperlinks that will link to your flyer from within the WeMail. In order to do this, we need one business day. Therefore, email the flyer and WeMail article to woodsonWEMail@woodsonptso.orgno later than 5pm on the Thursday prior to Monday’s publication.
  6. All other submissions must be made by 5pm on the Friday prior to Monday’s publication. Submit your entry to woodsonWEMail@woodsonptso.org as early as possible but not before the previous WeMail goes out. For example, if you want something published in the September 11 WeMail, submit the entry between September 6 and September 8. Email your submission to the WeMail editor at woodsonWEMail@woodsonptso.org; she will combine all submissions into one consolidated message.
  7. In the submission email subject line, include “WEMAIL” and give a brief description of what the submission contains (e.g., “Sophomore Class News”).

If you are subscribed to News You Choose, you will receive the PTSO WeMails. To check and/or update your subscriptions, go to the News You Choose Subscriber Preferences Page. You will need to use your email address to log in or to create a new account.
